A Celebration Of Craft Spirits

We Develop Brands, Import and Market Artisanal Spirits and Wines.

A new generation of craft beverages is coming to market, following the ongoing trend of customers preferring artisan-made goods over mass-produced goods. Artisanal distillers are looking for new ways to follow the craft brewing trend by using unique ingredients and showcasing distilling manufacturing processes. It is difficult for smaller distillers to gain entry into an industry that is dominated by large global brands. Showcasing workmanship and artisan ingredients in traditional spirits may provide brands a marketing advantage that helps them grab the attention of customers browsing the shelf and raise the prices of the products. However, although artisan distillers have a tremendous opportunity to provide new innovations and increased variety in the market, their brands are not very well recognized. We construct our marketing strategies on three approaches: experimentation, attention to detail, and introducing craft spirits to the public.

DEFINITION OF CRAFT

There are several definitions when you search for the meaning of “craft.” You could find phrases like “denoting or pertaining to food or drink created in a traditional or non-mechanized style by an individual or a small business,” or “related to food or drink created by small businesses employing traditional techniques.” While the phrase has no legal meaning, we feel that a spirit may be deemed craft if it demonstrates quality, attention to detail, the producer’s enthusiasm, as well as the brand’s heritage or history. Most industry members also believe that craft alcohol brands must have the three important features listed below:

01

Transparency and Responsibility.

A distillery that prioritizes openness in the distillation process and is open about its ingredients, distilling site, techniques, aging procedures, and bottling site and procedure.

02

Handmade Production.

A distillery that produces under 750,000 gallons of beverage alcohol per year. Rather than how much is produced or how many gallons are sold, these manufacturers put their focus on making top-quality products.

03

Independently Owned.

A distillery that is owned and run independently, having more than a 75% ownership participation in operational management. Craft alcohol brands may have an influence on communities by providing employment to local families, allowing them to rise out of poverty.

Craft Wine

Craft wine production is limited to runs of 5,000 cases or less. But these wines also need to be authentic and traceable to their origins. Craft wines are distinguished by the care and attention to detail that goes into their production.

Artisanal Spirits

The strong entrepreneurial spirit fueled the growth of the craft beer sector now fuels the creators of small distilleries. Predictions show that craft spirits volume will reach 25.6 million cases by 2020 in the United States.

CRAFT ASSOCIATIONS

Several craft brewer organizations combined in 2005 to establish the Brewers Association, representing the interests of craft distillers. The presence of these organizations demonstrates the success of craft breweries. These organizations give collective power in the face of common obstacles that continue to emerge in the sector, such as regulatory, taxes, and licensing concerns.

Qualities of Craft Spirits

The increased willingness of consumers throughout the globe to move beyond their comfort zones, as seen by the 39% of global spirit drinkers who are actively sampling new types, is especially prevalent among Millennials. Distillers will now have a new approach to marketing to experienced consumers, by developing different types of products. The makers of craft distillers should strive to enhance their goods by attempting to include new and different ingredients while also finding new ways to approach the kind of items that customers wish to explore. Consumers are most inclined to experiment with new or different sorts of whiskey, followed by vodka and liqueurs. As a result, distillers should strive to extend their product offerings within these high-demand areas. Using more flexible spirits, like gin, distillers could develop inventive mixtures to provide maximum coverage and decrease financial risk.

Smaller firms saturated the market with opportunities after the craft movement’s popularity, employing interesting, imaginative combinations to entice customers who are intrigued by new things. However, just as the movement captured the attention of consumers, global corporations saw the lucrative attraction of labeling their goods as “craft.” Because there is no legal definition to restrict its usage, the term has become ambiguous, since multinational corporations may lawfully use it in advertising campaigns even if their goods do not meet the “official” characteristics of craft. Concerns about “craft” and “artisan” being used as marketing gimmicks have caused the word to lose its luster with many customers. Craft distillers must demonstrate their skills and authenticity to regain the craft definition and customer confidence in order to differentiate truly “artisan” goods from multinational competition. The use of more natural ingredients in the manufacturing process, together with openness about the process, may help distillers use authenticity as a competitive advantage and remain faithful to the artisan brand image. It is worth noting that tasting events are an excellent way for customers to try the items before purchasing them and gain a better understanding of what it means to be an artisan. By engaging the customer, authenticity and brand loyalty and trust are strengthened.
While artisanal spirits are a rising trend in the beverage industry, many craft spirit businesses remain relatively obscure. Using secrecy to enhance attractiveness may be part of the draw of artisan spirits, but if brands aren’t seen enough, the sector might become unprofitable. While artisan producers face severe competition from global companies that dominate the spirits industry, their brands are not generally noticed by distributors and customers. Small distilleries find it difficult to establish themselves due to this. Despite this, artisan distilleries may earn attention in many ways. Assuming a distillery remains committed to making artisanal, inventive spirits and chooses to stay independent, craft spirits businesses may use narrative labeling, creative internet marketing, and word of-mouth advertising to increase brand loyalty. Small-scale producers may use events such as craft spirit festivals to build and expand their customers’ awareness of craft spirit brands, which will help encourage increased demand among consumers and market growth.

Craft Spirits Certification

01. Small and Independent.

The Brewers Association defines a craft brewer as follows. In order to be certified, The American Distilling Institute stipulates that no more than 25% of a craft producer be owned or managed by a non-craft producer.

02. Traditional Techniques

The ADI accreditation includes a “hands-on production” requirement. A craft distiller must “produce spirits that represent the vision of their principle distillers utilizing any mix of conventional or new procedures including fermenting, distilling, and so on” in order to be certified.

03. Total Craft Sales

The amount of artisanal alcohol produced should be kept to a minimum. The American Distilling Institute has standards for certifying craft distilleries. To meet these standards, craft distilleries must have 52,000 cases or no more than 100,000 proof gallons of spirit produced and bottled on-site.

04. Approved Labeling

Just having an amazing product is not enough. According to the ADI, the spirit must be passed “through a still by a qualified craft producer with a TTB-approved label saying, ‘Distilled By’ with the name of the distilled spirits facility.
